Overview - In the northern Summer Zaandam sails the Alaska Inside Passage, and in other seasons she crosses the Pacific for southern Summer cruises around Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand, before heading for extensive cruises of East Asia. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities.

Accommodation - Cabins are spacious and come highly recommended. All include twin/queen bed with excellent bedding, sofa, flat-screen TV running movies, DVD player, fruit by order, bathrobes, hairdryers, make-up mirrors, kit of personal toiletries, shower tubs (only showers for inside cabins), personal safe and various services. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. There are no single cabins, and 23 that are wheelchair-accessible.

Suites come with bathtub and shower, private verandah, mini-bar, personalised stationary, and concierge service. Twenty-eight suites have accommodation for four. Verandah Suites come with lounge and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a private balcony. DeLuxe Verandah Suites add daily hors d'ouvres, breakfast and high tea in-suite, king-size bed, two-bed sofa, walk-in closet, concierge service, dis/embarkation priorities, access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge, and a cocktail party with the ship's officers. Four Penthouse Suites have in addition a microwave oven, pantry for meal preparation, whirlpool bath for four, and of course so much extra space at 108 m2 plus balcony.

Food & Dining - The ship has a variety of dining areas, from formal to casual. The two-deck Rotterdam Dining Room, at the rear of the ship with its grand staircase and views on three sides, serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating. Waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. The alternative restaurant The Pinnacle Grill is well worth the additional cover charge, with meals served in most elegant settings. The Lido deck Canaletto opens for dinner only, and offers a menu of familiar Italian dishes.

The Lido Restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, has two serving lines during the day offering food cooked à la minute, and at night opens as a popular and casual bistro. Outside meal times it serves sandwiches, ice cream, and special late-night offerings. Additionally there are pool-side burgers, hot dogs, Mexican food, and a coffee bar. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper.

Entertainment & Activities - At night the two-deck Mondriaan Showlounge offers (twice nightly) musical productions, cabaret, and its features include three video screens. There's lots of live music and dancing in the Ocean Bar, and around the three bars in the Mix. Sip drinks from the upper deck Crow's Nest Lounge with its wrap-around views of the ship's progress, while by night it turns into a nightclub. Evening entertainment includes the casino and eight different bars.

By day there are Bridge, Bingo, trivia games, Sudoku, cooking demos, movies and the like. Book early for the for-fee culinary workshops and wine tastings in the Wayang Theatre and Culinary Arts Centre. The Microsoft Digital Workshops include photography, creating web-sites and blogs, making a vacation video, and one-on-one coaching. The fresh-water Lido deck pool, flanked by two hot tubs, has a retractable cover. The aft pool resort area the Sea View Pool is a place to lounge with a slice of pizza. The Greenhouse Spa and Salon includes sauna, steam rooms, treatment rooms, and a fully-equipped gymnasium with circuit-training and fitness classes. There are also courts and a jogging course. Children are catered for at Club HAL with supervised activities, and teens socialise at The Loft.
